Waiting was the worst. Transmission with Iron Man cut out once he hit the atmosphere and white trails of burned vapor lingered for a few moments before the sky returned to blue.
And then a piece of red metal tumbled out of the sky, end over end. Tony was not flying, he was not responding, he was plummeting. Thor swung Mjolnir but it didn't matter, before he could get off the ground, the Hulk caught their strange hero and helped ease him -- sort of -- to the street.
It didn't matter. Tony wasn't moving. The smell of blood from Loki's toss through the windows and the standard banging around inside the suit would hit Steve as the Captain leaned over him.
